ELDER & FAMILY TOWNHOUSES (Forest Wilderness)
Mayo,Yukon, 2010 (Prel Design)
"The clearest way into the Universe
is through a FOREST WILDERNESS."
~ John Muir
This proposed multi unit development will provide affordable housing for a mix of residents that includes elders, small families and singles in a facility owned and managed by the community. Several prototypes have been developed (4 unit and 8 unit) including at grade universal design self contained units and two story townhouses. All will tie into an existing community district services facility to share geo exchange heating, fire protection, domestic drinking water and emergency power supply.
The project is proposed for Mayo, Yukon in a forested area at the edge of a spectacular bluff. It overlooks the Stewart and Mayo Rivers. The multi unit development has been designed to take advantage of this unique site, a prominent escarpment—and its intimate relationship to the forest and its proximity to a 6,000 year old heritage trail. The housing's form with its sweeping rooflines, and douglas fir and local spruce logs and timbers pays homage to the forest and mountain setting.
