Buildings have an enormous impact on the environment. They occupy large tracts of land—alter the ground, percolation of rainwater—interrupt wildlife patterns—and use multiple materials, labour, and fuel. They account for 48% of all energy expended, 76% of all electricity, almost 50% of all green house gas (GHG) emissions, consume the majority of the world’s natural resources, and make up most of the waste in our landfills.

The adverse effects of GHG, the destruction by buildings of micro ecosystems, and the rapid depletion of non-renewable energy sources are well documented. Gas and oil will continue to become more expensive and problematic with regard to increasing global C02 emissions. That is why building energy-efficient, environmentally balanced communities powered by alternative sources of energy (sun, earth, wind, water) and using renewable materials especially carbon neutral wood construction makes sense. This is particularly important for northern communities where the costs of energy are much higher and effects of global warming are more pronounced.

Years ago, Thomas Edison mused about the power of renewable energy. We are at the crossroad he unknowingly foretold. Green design professionals, in partnership with their clients, can lead the way to “tackle” the stewardship approach that is required, one that integrates ecologically based sustainable community planning and architecture — "Environmental Design"  into all future developments.

Since our founding, Broadway Architects have worked closely with many communities, resorts and governments to create designs and guidelines for environmentally responsive development—in seeking  "ECOlibrium".  Yukon Hot Springs Resort (Takhini Hot Springs),  Manning Park Resort, Government House, Dune’na Zra Sanch’i Ku Daycare, Health Social Healing Centre, Seabird Island Sustainable Community Housing, Cayoose Community Centre, and Raven's Nest Micro Unit Apartments are all projects that illustrate our continued dedication to sustainable development.
